MESSAGE FROM ROGER TO THE CHOIR

May 1, 2008

Dear Kulshan Chorus Members:

Hi and thanks for your energy and stamina in the rehearsal with Paul. It's tough working through music with the band for the first time, but essential to working out the kinks and giving everyone a chance to synchronize with the musician. I thought the rehearsal went very well, a lot was accomplished.  Many of the songs sounded solid.

Thank you and see you on Tuesday
.

    ~ Roger

Still Good Advice from Roger's April 15 Letter:

It is highly recommended that singers do the following at this time:

1.  Learn the words to any songs that you do not already know.  Say them, recite them, repeat the parts that you find tricky.
The goal is to use your music as a guide, not to be cemented to every word on every page.

2. Regularly sing along on your part while listening to the rehearsal CD.
If you are familiar with the tune, the words, the stops and starts, most of the recordings - especially those by the Kulshan Chorus - will greatly assist in learning the music.

3. Attend rehearsals. Three additional Tuesday rehearsals have been added to the schedule.  Make attending a priority.

4. Study your music.  The rehearsals can provide you with every possible assistance in learning a song, but how well you learn it is up to you.  Don't hang back.
Do your study now, and then you can have loads of fun, knowing the songs and singing them without fear of not knowing where you are, or what you are singing.

5. Always know what you are doing.  The recommended study, above, will lead to less confusion, and make singing all the more fun.

6. Sing with good breath support and listen for blend - match your voice to the section, watch for directing cues, get your face out of the book as often as possible.

Below are some specific references regarding parts that may be useful:

At meas 32 A2 drops to tenor staff for 2 notes (as we have been doing it)
At meas 33 A1 moves to bottom note of top staff (as we have been doing it)
At meas 36 A1 drops from bottom note in top staff to second staff
At meas 37 a few S1 voices sing top note of topmost staff
At meas 40 A1 and A2 both begin singing on 2nd staff and do so unless there is a repeat of situations as in previously described layout.

Ubi Caritas:
The counting for the "ending portion" stays constant, meaning that where the measures with 8th notes appear, each eighth will be counted as if it were half of the quarter notes previously counted. or >> 1 &, 2 &, becomes 1, 2, 3, 4, with no break in stride.

This may be common sense but must be said never-the-less.....
it's tight quarters up there on the stage, the lights can get hot, singers can be nervous so:

    • Please do not wear perfume or aftershave to concerts.
    • No drugs or alcohol, especially during performances.
    • Take a bath, brush your teeth, etc.

CONCERT COSTUME:
Each section has its own color scheme. Please avoid primary colors, stay with secondary and blended solid colors. Fabrics should be solid, not prints, and any bright, shiny material such as silk, rayon, velvet, satin or other elegant texture. NO T-SHIRT, JERSEY OR DENIM PLEASE.

If you have any questions, please ask a board member.

- see photo.
Check out the Photo Galleries for i
deas.

Black lowers

Black pants, black skirts, black stockings (not sheer) and black dress shoes.
     *
High heels are a painful risk.
*No* light or white socks or shoes.
*No* bare legs or ankles - wear black stockings or tights if you are wearing a skirt.
REASON - The stage lights enhance light colors and bare legs - it looks funky and distracting to the audience

*solid* colors for your shirts and tops.

Your color is the chosen color for your section - see chart below.
